Opinion: CBSE Board 2021 Evaluation Criteria

Written by Meghna Khan,on Jun 18, 2021

These are extraordinary times and it has been specially hard for students from last year onwards. To put things in context, “At the height of Covid-19,” schools in as many as 192 countries globally closed down leaving 1.6 billion students without in-person learning as per UNESCO. More than half the world’s student population in 51 countries are still unable to return to school (almost a billion students!).
Education boards world wide are trying best to come up with solutions to the situation in a way that it doesn't hurt the future of their students. The recent announcement by CBSE (which is the most accepted and largest board of education in India) - to consider marks from Class 10th, 11th and 12th pre-boards in arriving at the final Class 12 results - is a great example of innovation that is happening in education boards worldwide. More than 1.2 Million students were expected to appear for Class 12 exams this year and all of them are now subject to this new criteria announced by CBSE.

In my opinion, this is a great decision taken by CBSE and gives a definitive edge to students who have been consistant in their performance throughout. Such students will see no significant drop in their Class 12 results as they would have been consistent throughout their Class 10 exams onwards. However, students who might have planned to put all their effort in Class 12 finals while taking their Class 10 and 11th exams may feel the pinch of this new approach. Some students who may not have scored well in Class 10 and 11 due to various reasons may also feel disappointed by the new criteria.
The best thing about this new approach is that it keeps the safety of our children first and takes a reasonable, balanced approach to save this precious academic year of our youth.
However, the good news is that students who are not satisfied with the results of the assessment will have an opportunity to appear in examinations when conditions are conducive for holding the examinations by CBSE. All in all, a very progressive decision by CBSE that will go a long way in setting up our youth for success.
